WHAT IS CHITS? The
Community Health Information Tracking System or CHITS (www.chits.info) is an extensible, modular, open source information system for rural health units (initially for the Philippines). It collects existing routine health data from vertical programs in the Field Health Service Information System (FHSIS) and integrates them into a unified, comprehensive computerized information system. Through CHITS, community-based health information is made available not only to public health agencies requiring community level information but also to the community itself which generates the information. It enables the community to use this information for local decision-making and health planning. In addition to software, CHITS also includes structured capability-building programs designed to improve the health information systems within local health centers, regardless of the level of automation. CHITS began in Pasay City and is now in four municipalities around the country with requests for installation from many more. Read more about it

ABOUT CHITS
WHAT IS CHITS? CHITS stands for the
Community Health Information Tracking System. It is an extensible, modular system that leverages existing routine health information systems (vertical programs) in public health to serve as a starting point for implementing comprehensive information system integration. Through CHITS, community-based health information is made available not only to public health agencies requiring community level information but also to the community itself which generates the information. It enables the community to use this information for local decision-making. CHITS is more than software and uses unconventional strategies. Read more about it
here.
WHO CREATED CHITS? CHITS was originally created by a software development team from the University of the Philippines [1] led by Dr. Herman Tolentino. This team has since expanded into a cross-cutting collaboration and implementation team and now includes developers from different parts of the world. Read more about the developer team
here.
HOW CAN I USE CHITS? CHITS requires some level of expertise for
implementation. We did not specifically say
installation here and there is a reason for this. You might want to get started by subscribing to the stakeholder mailing list at
chits at googlegroups.com. You may also get in touch with us from
here. Of course we would want you to
get involved in whatever way you can.
WHAT IS THE CHITS MANIFESTO? There are three important things we want CHITS to address as a health information system: improving data quality [2] at the source, simplifying information management processes, building capacity at the community level, and harnessing community partnerships that promote mutual benefit. You can read the expanded manifesto
here.
WHERE CAN I OBTAIN CHITS SOFTWARE? CHITS is open source [3] software in active development. You can obtain the source code from the
Berlios∞ open source repository. After downloading the software, you can use this
CHITS quick installation guide to set up your CHITS application server.
CHITS SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
Berlios CHITS Software Download∞: This is where you download the CHITS source code so you can install it on your computer. CHITS is a web-based application and functions in a local area network environment. We have packaged CHITS for both Windows and Linux deployment.
Developer Information NEW!: CHITS uses a modular architecture for software development. We have prepared extensive documentation for software developers who want to get involved with the creation of CHITS modules.

CHITS ARTICLES
2004 Nine Projects∞ from Six Countries from
International Development Research Centre∞ (IDRC) of Canada
In 2004, CHITS was featured in the marketing brochure of the International Development Research Centre of Canada. A key milestone in its historical development is a decision by the implementation team to change the specifications of the project as funded because the original project as proposed and funded will not fill the gaps as reflected by reality in the implementation environment.

2006 Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme Article∞
In 2006, the Asia Pacific Development Information Program∞ publishes news about CHITS' selection as a Stockholm Challenge∞ finalist in the Health Category.
2006 Three Philippine Articles
In 2006, three Philippine news articles came out about CHITS. The INQ7.net article∞ by Mr. Erwin Oliva was about Philippines entries in the 2006 Stockholm Challenge mentioning CHITS as one of them. Another article∞ by Mr. Dominiqe Cimafranca, a member of the Philippine Linux Users Group (PLUG), another still another one∞ from the PLUG describes CHITS and how Dr. Alvin Marcelo won an award as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men in 2005 for his work with CHITS and open source software in health care.
